Exercise

  1. How would you go about writing a mystery story? Read the first two or three paragraphs of some (3-4) mystery stories on the first site below. See how much information the author gives you early in the story. Then think out a possible mystery story in your head but write only the first two or three paragraphs. Exchange your paragraphs with three or four others. What conclusions can you draw?
  2. Go back to "Hijack". At what point can you see that something "fishy" is going on when you read it a second time?
  3. For a real challenge, read about a master of the short story with a twist, O Henry, and then read some of his stories on the second site below.
