Fact Box: Traditional stories

'How the Sun Came to Be' is a traditional Aboriginal tale, a Tjukurpa. All tribes have their own stories of how the sun first came to be. This tale comes from Central Victoria.

Traditional stories, such as legends, fairytales, myths and ballads often contain:

  • a beginning (“Once upon a time ...” or other set phrases, or introductions of the main characters such as the hero, a god or an animal)
  • a middle part (events are repeated, often three times)
  • an ending where the problems are solved, something is explained, or the hero gets his reward and the villains get their deserved punishment
  • very few characters, and the characters often have exaggerated qualities (extremely good, really evil, enormously pretty)
